15-days Workshop on Resort & Spa Design in Tropics
-One Latitude – 3 terrains- 3 climatic zones
Study Abroad programme
In most Asian countries where international tourism is encouraged, there is a large scope for designing tourist infrastructure like Resorts and Spas. Western architects are given lucrative design assignments in upcoming countries like Cambodia, Vietnam, etc. and most western Architects have less knowledge of climatic conditions, locally available materials, sustainable building skills and technology with which to design such projects.
Programme is divided into three phases in three destinations.
Destination 1 – Bangalore
Metro-resort and Hospitality Architecture
The participants will start their journey from Bangalore, a bustling metropolis with a population of over 4 million. It is the IT capital of India, affectionately called the "Silicon Valley of India" due to its high concentration of IT industry, salubrious climate, and high human intellect potential. The participants will be staying in a unique subterranean resort on the outskirts of the city. Here, they will be given a demonstration of sustainable building technologies used in buildings in the tropics, eco-sensitive planning, and insight into the socio-cultural aspects of designing for the tropics. The ambience of stay in the place, aptly named "Guhantara" (Cave Dwelling), will itself be an inspiration for the participants to be able to design a built intervention in perfect consonance with nature.
Destination 2 – Sakleshpur
Climate Responsive Architecture & Holiday Resort
The participants will next travel to Sakleshpur, a serene hill station in Karnataka’s Malnad region, nestled within the lush Western Ghats. Known for its cool climate, rolling hills, and rich plantation landscape, Sakleshpur is surrounded by coffee, cardamom, pepper, and areca estates that create a distinctive ecological setting. The region offers an ideal context for understanding climate-responsive architecture, where terrain, rainfall, vegetation, and local building responses are closely interconnected. The nearby Bisle Reserve Forest and Bisle Ghat area are also recognized for their remarkable biodiversity, making Sakleshpur an inspiring destination to explore architecture in harmony with nature.
Destination 3 – Mangalore
Cost Effective Architecture & South Indian Vernacular Architecture
The participants will next travel to Mangalore, a vibrant coastal city in Karnataka, where they will stay at a beach resort and engage with the region’s distinctive architectural tradit

Eligibility
Anyone with a background or interest in tropical sustainable architecture of India is eligible. Undergraduate students in architecture and design, as well as young architects and designers, are welcome to apply.
Course Fee
The cost of the entire workshop is Euro 1,300. It includes:

Certificates
At the end of the program, students who satisfactorily complete all course requirements will be awarded a Certificate of Participation in the Architecture Study Program, along with recognition of the specific learning outcomes from the program.
Safety and Security Measures
- As this is a specialized student program, the highest level of safety and security standards is maintained.
- All accommodation arrangements are carefully selected based on location and security.
- All groups are accompanied by eminent faculty members from colleges.
- No long night journeys (except while connecting from the local city to the international airport).
- Night curfew is set at 11:00 PM.
- Safe bottled drinking water will be provided throughout the program.
- An exclusive 23-seater A/C bus will be available for transportation throughout the workshop.
- Health insurance will be provided, and medical assistance will be arranged at all locations.
- Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided.
- Twin-sharing bedrooms (2 students per room).
- Students are individually responsible for the safety of their passports, credit cards, and valuables.

Arrival & Departure
- All participants are expected to arrive in Bangalore on the previous evening.
- Hotel transfer will be provided free of cost for participants arriving at Bangalore airport in groups of not less than 6 members.
- Hotel transfer will be available at an additional cost for individually arriving participants.
- The first venue of the workshop is the well-known eco-resort "Our Native Village".
- The inaugural session and briefing will begin at 11:00 AM on the first day.
- For departure, airport transfer will be arranged on individual request as per flight convenience.
Grand Finale of the Workshop
- On the last day of the workshop, a seminar will be आयोजित in Bangalore where participants will present their work and share their experiences and design outcomes.
- There will be an interactive session with eminent architects of Bangalore and architecture students.
- Certificates will be awarded, followed by a gala dinner.
Mode of Payment
- Book your place by paying a registration fee of Euro 50 by 20th March 2018.
- Early bird registration (by 10th April 2018): Euro 1250.
- From 10th April to 1st May 2018: Euro 1350.

Course Duration
The course duration is 15 days.
Students will be involved in activities that enable them to explore and learn about tropical living and architecture of South India, including the built environment and landscapes ranging from plains to coastal regions.
The subjects in this course are integrated with the student project (Architecture Studio), which focuses on programming and designing a tropical holiday resort.
