SUMMER STUDY PROGRAMME

5-days Workshop on Resort & Spa Design in Tropics

-One Latitude – 3 terrains- 3 climatic zones

Introduction

In most Asian countries where international tourism is encouraged, there is a large scope for designing tourist infrastructure like Resorts and Spas. Western architects are given lucrative design assignments in upcoming countries like Cambodia, Vietnam, etc. and most western Architects have less knowledge of climatic conditions, locally available materials, sustainable building skills and technology with which to design such projects.

Programme is divided into three phases in three destinations.

BANGALORE - SAKLESHPUR - MANGALORE

DESTINATION 1 – BANGALORE

Metro-resort and Hospitality architecture

The participants will start their journey from Bangalore. A bustling Metropolis with a population of over 4 million, the IT capital of India affectionately called "the Silicon Valley of India" due to its high concentration of IT industry, salubrious climate and high human intellect potential. The participants will be staying in a unique subterranean resort on the outskirts of the city. Here they will be given a demonstration of sustainable building technologies used in buildings in the tropics, eco-sensitive planning and an insight into the socio-cultural aspects of designing for tropics. The ambience of stay in the place aptly named "GUHANTARA"( Cave Dwelling) will in itself be an inspiration for the participants to be able to design a built intervention in perfect consonance with nature.

DESTINATION 2 – SAKLESHPUR

Climate Responsive Architecture & Holiday Resort

Next the locale shifts to Sakleshpur, an idyllic spot situated in the Western Ghats. Rich in flora and fauna and perched on a plateau Sakleshpur is a hill station town. The town lies in the Malnad region on the magnificent hills of the biodiversity hotspot, the Western Ghats. It has a temperate climate surrounded with lofty green hills full of coffee, cardamom, pepper and areca plantations. The southern range, which includes Bisle reserve forest and the region around Sakleshpur is listed as one of the 18 most diverse spots in the world in terms of flora and fauna.

DESTINATION 3 – MANGALORE

Cost Effective Architecture & South Indian Vernacular Architecture.

The participants will be escorted to Mangalore and stay in a beach resort. Here they will be given an insight into indigenous building techniques with hands on workshop which would culminate in a "Design & Build" assignment with inputs from Architects and skilled personnel. Mangalore is demographically diverse with hot humid climate. It is the largest city in the Coastal and Malnad regions of Karnataka. The city's landscape is characterized by rolling hills, coconut palms, freshwater streams and hard red-clay tiled-roof buildings. Mangalore was declared the eighth cleanest city in India.
